Introduction

Key Stage 3 Geography at Perryfields supports a unique approach to providing the strong foundations and skills practise that our students need to fully prepare them to take on the AQA GSCE specification. The content is both topical and relevant and aims to enthuse students whilst building knowledge and understanding that is essential for progression to GCSE. At year 9, the focus for delivery is ‘The Geography of the wider world’. Due to recent temporary curriculum changes, students in Year 9 will be working through the ‘Physical landscapes in the UK’ and ‘Weather and climate in the UK’ topics in the Autumn term, to assist their transition into GCSE.

Our Unequal WorldLearning about global inequality and levels of development across our world introduces the concept of uneven development, as well as how it is measured and the varying challenges and opportunities it presents. Students will learn about why health, food, trade and other factors are important for the development of countries and who is responsible for managing development. Students will use graphical sources to identify and discuss patterns in development over time and offer reasons for variations.

Key terminology will be taught and encouraged throughout the course

Focus on AfricaThe second KS3 unit to contain an in-depth study of one particular area focuses on the diverse continent of Africa. Taking into account Africa’s biomes, people, landscapes and natural resources, embeds students’ knowledge of these concepts by putting them into context with specific locations such as the Sahara Desert and Nigeria. Learners fully analyse reasons why each is the way it is portrayed.

Students will then carry out detailed investigations into Urban Problems in Kolkata looking at the human processes and systems, how they change, both spatially and temporally.
